SHARPEN YOUR EDGE HANDS ON WORKSHOP
EDMONTON SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 27, 2026
AM/PM SESSIONS

Sharpening is about much more than achieving the correct angle. The true value lies in understanding why a sharp, properly maintained instrument improves efficiency, ergonomics, clinician confidence, and ultimately, patient outcomes.
This highly interactive, hands-on workshop takes a practical approach to evaluating your instrumentation skills, sharpening techniques, and instrument selection. You’ll gain the knowledge and confidence to maximize the lifespan of your instruments while ensuring every edge performs at its best.
Eligible for 4 PACE approved credits
One of the most common challenges within a dental practice is determining the appropriate investment in hand instruments and understanding when they should be maintained or replaced.
Together we’ll answer questions such as:
How many hand instruments are actually needed?
How often should instruments be sharpened?
Are you over-sharpening, under-sharpening, or sharpening correctly?
How can proper sharpening improve clinical efficiency and reduce instrument replacement costs?
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Evaluate instrument condition and sharpening technique
Assess your current instrument kits, evaluate blade integrity and sharpening proficiency, identify common sharpening errors, and determine whether your instruments are being properly maintained.
2. Master multiple sharpening techniques
Gain hands-on experience sharpening three groups of instruments using three different methods. Compare stones, cards, and a mechanical fine-tuning system to determine which techniques best suit your clinical practice.
3. Build smarter instrument kits
Design customized instrument kits for four different clinical scenarios while learning how strategic instrument selection improves efficiency, ergonomics, and treatment outcomes.
4. Connect diagnosis with instrumentation
Strengthen your diagnostic skills and understand why accurate assessment should guide instrument selection and sharpening priorities before treatment begins.
Stay Ahead of the Curve
Be proactive in developing the clinical skills needed to confidently manage the instrumentation challenges dental hygienists face every day.
